Providence Health & Services Patient Services Technician in Torrance, California

Description:

Providence is calling a Patient Services Technician (Part Time/Day Shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, CA.

We are seeking a Patient Services Technician who is accountable to the bedside RN and Nurse Leader to facilitate a safe and secure environment for the patient, family and providers in the department in completion of the duties delegated to them for the shift and maintaining clear communication between the needs of the patient through the RN and Nurse Leader, under direct supervision.

In this position you will:

  • Oversee the front desk operations, including welcoming and check-in of patients (room readiness), families and visitors. Be responsible for checking employee badges. Monitor noise level in area

  • Transport and/or escort patients as well as holding patients/infants for care or procedures

  • Communicate effectively with the RN and other team members regarding equipment issues as well as patient, family and physician issues or concerns. Communicate in a compassionate and professional manner with all staff, patients, families and visitors. Report changes in patient condition in a timely and consistent manner to RN and professional associates

  • Assist RN with patient basic needs, such as turning, bathing and feeding. Assist patients with ordering food

  • Transport lab specimens and blood products

  • Electronically document information in an accurate and timely manner. Competent in the input and retrieval of this information within the patient’s medical record. Push/pull and change patient locations in the electronic medical record. Print out census and patient accommodations, verify accuracy, make changes when needed in the electronic medical record

  • Follow defined process to ensure paper medical records are routed correctly to HIM to be scanned into the electronic medical record. Electronically add charges to patients account for billing purposes

  • Assist in scheduling treatments and tests and printing patient labels

  • Maintain and operate multiple telecommunications systems. Need to understand and be able to coordinate the process for downtime slips. Facilitate inter-department communication regarding transfers, admits and discharges

  • Accurately maintain department records, reports, and files per procedure. Assist with maintenance of patient databases and unit specific audits. Assist with collection of data for quality measures as appropriate and necessary

  • Be responsible for measuring and recording unit refrigerator temperatures on a daily basis per hospital policy

  • Assist in orientating other hospital employees and new hires to respective unit

  • Be responsible for maintaining, ordering and stocking unit supplies in an efficient and cost effective manner. Arrange environmental maintenance and repairs as needed and follow up on work orders not completed. Performs Quality Control check on POS devices

  • Stock, replenish and clean isolation carts daily with supplies from an approved checklist by Infection, Blood and Pharmacy / committee

  • Prepare rooms for admissions and procedures, with required equipment and supplies stocked to appropriate levels. Utilize standard checklist for room readiness and completes checklist for patient chart

  • Clean designated unit specific equipment according to Infection Control standards

  • Round in patient rooms, introducing self at the start of each shift.

  • Actively participate in hourly rounding, uses AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation and Thank You) at every encounter with patient and family

  • Ask patient about opportunities for the hospital to provide a compassionate patient experience

  • Respond to bed alarms and staff the call light system, and addresses patient every time by name

  • STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:

  • Actively support and incorporate the mission and core values into daily practice. Treat all others with respect, compassion and demonstrates excellence, justice, stewardship, and compassion in daily work and relationships with others

  • Report to work as scheduled and on time. Adhere to timely rest and meal breaks

  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information

  • Demonstrate positive and constructive interpersonal relations in dealing with others. Recognize and respect the diversity of patients and families, employees, manager, medical staff, volunteers, and community members so that productivity and positive relations are maximized

  • Consistently demonstrate and incorporate principles of safety and infection control into daily practice as outlined in the Environment of Care, Infection Control, and Exposure Control manuals. Uses protective equipment and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential for contact with blood, body fluids, and/or chemicals. Maintain knowledge of work-appropriate aspects of environment of care program. Participate in fire and disaster drills. Complete mandatory requirements for safety, security, confidentiality and unit/hospital required competencies

  • Round on patients, family members

  • Greet everyone entering area

  • Monitor noise level

  • Demonstrate accuracy in computer input

  • Perform clerical skills to facilitate the accurate and efficient operation of the assigned patient care areas

  • Keep area clean and neat

  • Organize work to facilitate a smooth and efficient practice

  • Initiate and develop communication in order to promote a cohesive health care environment and facilitate effective working relationships

  • Communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing

  • Practice customer service excellence

  • Support a safe and effective workplace environment through strong team dynamics and a positive approach to workplace duties/assignments

  • Perform other related duties as required to assist with the smooth operation of the assigned Nursing Unit

  • Complete age specific competency requirements of assigned department

  • Complete all required job related competencies and education of the Division of Nursing

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of Medical Terminology course or successful completion of hospital medical terminology test within 90 days of hire

  • Current CPR Certification (BLS Healthcare Provider)

  • One year experience as a Unit Secretary or Nurse Assistant in a comparable size facility, preferably within the same or similar specialty.

  • Proficient in Medical Terminology

  • Basic computer skills

  • Customer Service Training

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Completed training as a Certified Nursing Assistant
