Providence Health & Services Nutrition Assistant in Torrance, California


Providence is calling a Nutrition Assistant (Per diem/Day shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary ,Torrance CA.

We are seeking a Nutrition Assistant who will oversee and provide paraprofessional nutritional care to hospital patients. Provide patient care to the following age groups: infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young, middle and older adults.

In this position you will:

  • Prioritize and organize workload according to established department guidelines and complete work in the specified time as stated in the task schedule

  • Interview all assigned patients/significant others to obtain information regarding food preferences, allergies and eating patterns

  • Document basic nutritional information in the patient electronic medical record

  • Provide diet instructions and food drug interaction counseling as requested by the registered dietitian using the Nutrition Care Manual handouts. If the patient requires additional information, the registered dietitian will be consulted

  • Maintain current information in the electronic medical record and automated diet office system

  • Update automated diet office to ensure timeliness of physicians diet order, changes for meal delivery, and other related nutritional needs

  • Answer department telephone and responds to all patient related messages promptly

  • Respond to departmental computer (patient/nursing) requests as needed

  • Check individual patient nourishments for accuracy

  • Check patient food service trayline for accuracy, portion control and quality of food served

  • Print tray tickets and tally sheets as needed

  • Ability to be a self starter and work with minimal supervision

  • Documentation/Information Management:

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the electronic medical record and electronic diet office system

  • Perform documentation on unit and in patient's chart which is timely according to established department policy, concise and accurate according to department policy

  • Written work is grammatically correct, understandable, complete and appropriate for the intended recipient

  • Communicate in a clear, calm and constructive manner

  • Maintain the strictest level of confidentiality with all patient and hospital information

  • Professional Growth/Development:

  • Assume responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice

  • Attend all department staff meetings and inservices while on duty

  • Attend the equivalent of at least one full day nutrition/dietetics related seminar and/or lectures

  • Performance Improvement/Quality and Safety:

  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities and work to correct deficiencies identified

  • Actively support the facility with regards to continuous compliance with all regulatory and performance improvement standards including, but not limited to the Joint Commission, CDPH, CMS Core Measures, IHI initiatives, etc.

  • Maintain current knowledge regarding the Joint Commission standards for this position

  • Commit to and actively participates in ongoing compliance

  • Have knowledge of Tracer methodology

  • Provide the best care and service to every person, every time (PHS Quality Vision)

  • Provide care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient/family entered (PHS Quality definition)

  • Responsible for knowledge of and compliance with budget

  • Perform duties in allotted time

  • Consistently swipe in and out for the work day and meal period at the appropriate times

  • Constantly refer and strictly adheres to the Patient Care Policy and Procedure Manual and the Nutrition Care Manual

  • Comply with organization-wide and department-specific policies and procedures, including working knowledge of policies, references to policies as needed and consistent compliance with the same

  • Comply with patient care requirements of all regulatory agencies, i.e., Joint Commission, DHS, including working knowledge of policies, references to policies as needed and compliance with same

  • Actively create an environment of safe delivery of patient care and functions with constant awareness of safety issues identify including immediately correcting/reporting any unsafe condition found to the immediate supervisor according to policy and procedure

  • Willing to make schedule changes and or work additional hours during staffing shortages

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or related field at an accredited institution and course work/Training completion of Didactic Program in Dietetics

  • Requires the ability to establish and maintain a courteous and cooperative (service-oriented) working relationship with patients, families, visitors, hospital staff and co-workers

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year Dietetics experience in a hospital setting

  • Experience with an electronic medical record and diet office system
