Providence Health & Services Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator and Clinical Reviewer in Torrance, California


Providence is calling a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator and Clinical Reviewer (Full time/Variable shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, CA.

We are seeking a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator and Clinical Reviewer who will be responsible for facilitating all activities, within the Torrance Ministry, regarding the care of bariatric and metabolic disorder patients. The MBS coordinator will lead the achievement of LCMT becoming a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence as well as, oversee the development and maintenance of services within this program. Ability to design and align resources to support program initiative. Maintenance of positive relationships with internal and external referring physicians and support services. Development and maintenance of patient education classes and support groups. Development and maintenance of a data collection base to meet MBSAQIP requirements. Focus on continuous performance improvement and positive outcomes Performs all duties in a manner that promotes team concepts and reflects the mission and values of Providence St. Joseph Health and Services. The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) duties include collecting and submitting accurate, complete, and timely data to the MBSAQIP Data Registry Platform. The MBSCR works closely with the members of the MBS Committee and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement. The MBSCR generates reports from the MBSAQIP database and presents these reports to the MBS Committee.

In this position you will:

  • Lead the achievement of LCMT becoming a MBSAQIP accredited center

  • Manages the accreditation process, and ensure continuous compliance with MBSAQIP standards

  • Maintain relevant policies and procedures

  • Develop and provide patient education and collateral materials that are current, coordinated, available and effective

  • Develop and provide staff education

  • Maintain current and accurate patient data collection spreadsheet in compliance with MBSAQIP requirements

  • Lead continual process improvement efforts using data and outcomes

  • Participate in quality improvement efforts

  • Support the development of written protocols and education of nurses detailing the rapid communication and basic response to critical vital signs that is specifically required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events

  • Serve as the liaison between hospital and all surgeons performing metabolic and bariatric surgery at the hospital and general surgeons providing call coverage

  • Assist in maintaining the documentation of the call schedule for all bariatric surgeons

  • Serve as the liaison between the hospital and MBSAQIP

  • Remain current on the new technology trends, treatment modalities and research findings relative to this patient population. In collaboration with medical leadership, incorporate new technologies, treatments and evidenced based best practices and research into clinical practice

  • Routinely review program materials for current information, effectiveness and distribution channels

  • Actively purse referring physicians relationships and satisfaction

  • Adhere to established company compliance, policies, procedures and protocols

  • Identify 100% of metabolic and bariatric surgery patients for inclusion in the MBSAQIP data registry

  • Collect preoperative, intra operative, 30-day postoperative, and long term follow-up data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through coordinated effort with individual surgeons office

  • Identify streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process

  • Demonstrate appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into program

  • Utilize software applications for data collection and analysis

  • Responsible for the accurate, complete and timely entry of data into the program's database

  • Establishe effective working relationships with members of the hospital community

  • Serve as an educational resource on the MBSAQIP data registry platform for internal and external audiences by developing education material and delivering presentations

  • Participate in program teleconferences

  • Participate in data complication for audits and accreditation (or re accreditation) and site visits

  • Periodically attend in person professional development seminars offered at various annual meetings such as ASMBS, ACS, NSQIP, or ACS Clinical Congress


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Successfully completes the MBSCR Online Training Program

  • Current California State Registered Nurse license

  • BLS and ACLS certification

  • 3 years working in medical surgical or cardiovascular nursing unit

  • Knowledge of bariatric issues including definitions, contributing factors, common co-morbidities, surgical interventions, risk factors, expected outcomes, possible complications, psychological and social issues, safety issues, sensitivity issues

  • Ability to model a compassionate, kind and caring attitude in interactions with MBS patients and their support person

  • Skill in developing and presenting patient and staff education

  • Ability to effectively communicate to patients, customers, caregivers and leaders via written or verbal communication

  • Skilled in collaboration, consultation, conflict resolution, facilitation and team building

  • Ability to understand, anticipate and prioritize job responsibilities

  • Ability to remain flexible in response to changes in work demands, variety of projects and varying time lines

  • Ability to work independently but seek consultation when appropriate

  • Ability to work with multiple departments, physicians, physician office staff and leaders

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced sometimes stressful work environment

  • Ability to life and carry items weighing up to 20 lbs. during an eight-hour shift for distances no more than 30 feet. Must be able to reach above shoulder height

  • Clinical Knowledge and understanding of patient care

  • Computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft office and basic statistical skills. The ability to learn and utilize new software and web applications for data entry and report generation

  • KNowledge of hospital systems for the purpose of tracking information through various sources such as medical records, surgery clinics, death index, direct patient contact, accounts payable, and legal counsel

  • Ability to form positive working relationships with various hospital departments and staff in surgeon's office

  • Hospital department knowledge for the purpose of identifying opportunities to report metabolic and bariatric data to relevant groups or meetings. The ability to share information across functions.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in higher education in the healthcare field and/or computer training

  • 1 year working with Microsoft office, outlook, excel and power point

  • 1 year working with data collection and data entry

  • 1 year knowledge of medical terminology and health care field
