Providence Health & Services Director, Pharmacy Informatics in Torrance, California


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Director, Pharmacy Informatics PSJH to one of our locations: Renton WA, Anchorage AK, Missoula MT, Torrance or Burbank, CA.

We are seeking a Director, Pharmacy Informatics PSJH to be responsible for the strategic conception, development, implementation, support, and on-going optimization of the Clinical Informatics strategy with a focus on pharmacy informatics. Bringing expert clinical pharmacy and informatics knowledge to the role, he/she develops and directs the pharmacy component of the informatics support of EHR development and optimization and other pharmacy aligned products. In collaboration with system/regional/service area/ministry pharmacy leadership, he/she will set operational expectations for the field-based Pharmacy Informatics to help ensure a consistent knowledge and skill base and a standard approach for pharmacy-focused informatics support, training, and oversight and coordination of all pharmacy systems used within Providence St. Joseph Health. The Director, Pharmacy Informatics will participate in enterprise-wide pharmacy initiatives and Governance and will ensure that pharmacy informatics is aligned with Providence St. Joseph Health's clinical and strategic priorities.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Strategy Development and Alignment - Collaboration: Participates in development of PSJH clinical informatics strategy in collaboration with senior nursing/clinical and medical informatics and operational leaders. Focusing on pharmacy informatics, participates in collaborative development, implementation and measurement of a PSJH programmatic, interdisciplinary approach for clinical informatics competency acquisition, development, support, evaluation, and optimization. Directs adoption process for introducing and implementing new pharmacy-related services, technologies and/or applications into Information Services. Incorporates industry best practices and research into pharmacy informatics initiatives, with focus on ensuring safe, effective and efficient pharmacy information systems. Maintains relationships with key business partners and other senior industry leaders in order to leverage best practices, evaluate emerging trends, and distribute knowledge internally to inform plans and strategies. Serves as an expert pharmacy informatics consultant system, regional, and ministry levels.

  • Management and Leadership - Oversees, guides, and models excellent leadership behaviors in the management of pharmacy informatics at PSJH. Ensures that Pharmacy Informatics initiatives accurately reflect and reinforce standards and policies for use of pharmacy information systems within PSJH. Coordinates and facilitates teamwork with multidisciplinary groups facilitating cross-departmental strategy and process improvement initiatives. Provides responsive leadership; able to delegate, coordinate and motivate staff to achieve optimal performance in ensuring that direct and secondary reports support pharmacy informatics services and pharmacy systems effectively and meet the customer needs.

  • Operations - Collaborates with system/regional/service area/ministry pharmacy leadership to set and measure operational expectations for the field-based Pharmacy Informatics that reinforces a consistent approach to pharmacy-focused informatics support and training. Develops and utilizes quantitative and qualitative methods of data management to develop and apply measures for the impact and value of the Pharmacy Informatics role and uses findings to continuously improve. Directs collaborative development and measurement of Pharmacy Informatics workforce staffing plans, targeting optimal assignment of team members to meet support needs. Balances multiple priorities and information needs across pharmacy-related program and stakeholders.

  • Standards of Performance - Actively supports and incorporates the mission and core values of PSJH in daily activities and interactions with all others. Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information as required by Federal, State, and Company compliance policies. Ensures compliance in self and team with mandatory system training and education efforts. Consistently demonstrates and incorporates principles of safety and infection control into daily activities as outlined in system and department safety policies/procedures.

  • Customer Service - Develops and collaborates, using data, on individual and team objectives and capacities in the creation, definition, and advancement/support of new and existing standard operating procedures (SOP) and service level agreements (SLA) consistent with PSJH management, IS, and CI priorities with the goal of providing and maintaining excellent, realistic customer service. Measures and reports on individual and team objectives/SOPs/SLAs as required/requested by CI and IS leadership. Advocates for and supports a collaborative and just work environment that maintains and augments employee engagement and satisfaction with a career at PSJH


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Pharmacy Degree

  • State Board of Pharmacy (upon Hire)

  • At least 5 years of pharmacy leadership

  • At least 12 years of proven ability to interact at and communicate to all levels of an organization. Organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills and the ability to manage shifting priorities are critical for success in this position.

  • Demonstrated clinical credibility combined with broad expertise in informatics and strong technical background to be effective in Pharmacy and Information Services divisions.

  • Ability to effectively manage distributed, virtual teams and to accomplish work through subordinate directors, managers or high level individual contributors.

  • A positive force for change and a champion of use of IT in improving patient care; a supportive advocate of PSJH chosen vendors, strategies and solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives with an emphasis on employing software solutions that provide business value.

  • Thorough understanding of current best practices, developments, and trends in pharmacy informatics.

  • Ability to negotiate through challenging situations with both internal and external customers.

  • Ability to accurately prioritize and organize short-term and long-term responsibilities in response to changing demands.

  • Demonstrated patience and perseverance; will not give up when faced with resistance and setbacks.

  • Ability to comprehend customer business needs with respect to support of and impact to PSJH organizational objectives, mission, and core values.

  • Proficiency with operating and capital budgeting tools.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to rapidly summarize complex information and present to others.

  • Proficiency with the MS-Office suite of products.

  • Ability to travel throughout the health system as well as to meetings and seminars throughout United States.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Pharmacy residency in informatics (i.e. Clinical Informatics)

  • Board Clinical Informatics Certified or Master in Clinical Informatics, Healthcare administration or BA

  • 10 years or more of experience with management in a large healthcare system using the enterprise suite of Epic, Meditech, or Allscripts clinical health record applications.

  • 5 years or more of demonstrated ability to create and successfully execute strategic plans for highly complex issues, specifically for clinical technology adoption; recognized clinical expertise and leadership; understanding of healthcare information services; operations and support; experience standardizing complex and disparate processes; methodologies related to application management such as system deployment, support, and life cycle; experience in project management, process improvement methodology, change management, operational improvement in complex systems.
