We are seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist who will perform laboratory testing and blood component preparation in the transfusion service to provide timely and accurate information for safe and effective transfusion. Testing will be performed on patients of the following age groups: premature infants, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young, middle and older adults in all locations of the LCMHS system, as well as on referred specimens from outside locations; and samples from all classifications of blood donations. Maintains records of performance as defined in the transfusion medicine division procedure manuals.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain documented competency (verified by a qualified supervisor) in all areas of the transfusion service and clinical laboratory where expected to perform specimen testing and blood component preparation

  • Consistently perform duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision required. Prioritizes work according to established protocol. Follow division policies precisely to perform various procedures as listed on training checklist on patient and donor samples, blood and blood components; shows a complete understanding of division policies and procedures as outlined in the policy and procedure manuals; consistently and accurately documents all transfusion division procedures sufficient to meet regulatory standards. Perform successful completion of 100% of simple antibody identifications, and at least 75% of complex antibody identification problems. Not more than two (2) documented instances of clerical errors, and not more than one (1) technical error per year will be considered as meeting expectations. 100% accuracy is the minimum acceptable performance standard in both blood component labeling and blood component issuing

  • Consistently utilize knowledge in quality control procedures for each process; bases accuracy of test results on quality control results. Perform and record quality control using acceptable practice; detects, investigate and correct out-of-control conditions and clerical errors

  • Document performance of equipment, including daily temperature and other monitors as required. Report variances and corrective action to the Transfusion Division Manager or designee. Performance of 95% of assigned procedures will be considered as meeting expectations

  • Perform documentation of all procedures with special attention to the clerical accuracy. Accurately order and result procedures in the Laboratory Information System and/or manual worksheets as required by division policy. No more than two (2) instances of documentation errors is considered as meeting expectations

  • Perform CAP Surveys as requested, with accuracy and completeness according to the assigned rotation schedule. 100% accuracy is the minimum acceptable performance standard

  • Documentation/Information Management:

  • Always inform physician and/or other health care professionals of all clinical laboratory-designated critical values. Always obtain transfusion division manager and/or medical director approval for situations according to procedure “Problem Notification Guidelines” and any other required circumstances described in individual policies and procedures. Documents notifications according to laboratory policy. No instances of failure to notify will be considered as meeting expectations.

  • Consistently document and follow defined protocols or investigating out of control runs and implements necessary corrective actions

  • Consistently assure that test results correlate with the diagnosis and with other test results for the specimen. Questions all incompatible or extraordinary results. Investigate seemingly inappropriate blood and/or blood component orders. Always review results for clerical errors before they are reported to the patient medical record or blood donor medical history record

  • Maintain performance and preventative and remedial maintenance records for equipment in accordance with defined policies and procedures

  • Maintain quality assurance records for blood component preparation in accordance with defined policies and procedures

  • Performance Improvement/Quality and Safety:

  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities and works to correct deficiencies identified

  • Actively support the facility with regards to continuous compliance with all regulatory and performance improvement standards including, but not limited to JCAHO, Department of Health Services, CMS Core Measures, IHI initiatives, etc.

  • Maintain current knowledge regarding JCAHO standards for this position

  • Commit to and actively participates in ongoing compliance

  • Have knowledge of Tracer methodology

  • Provide the best care and service to every person, every time (PHS Quality Vision)

  • Provide care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient/family centered (PHS Quality definition)

  • Participate in the Transfusion Medicine Quality Program by documenting all errors, variances, and accidents through the “Notification of Variances” procedure

  • Contribute to continued process improvements by notifying supervisor of newly discovered problems. Offer suggestions for improvement of quality and work flow

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Education sufficient for license/certification

  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license required

  • Familiarity with applicable laws and regulatory standards of AABB, FDA, State of California required

  • Requires the ability to establish and maintain a courteous and cooperative (service-oriented) working relationship with patients, families, visitors, hospital staff and co-workers

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • MT(ASCP) certification

  • BB(ASCP) certification

  • 1 year experience in hospital-based blood bank

  • Experience with Misys Information Systems
